One of the smallest biologically diverse countries in Asia listed by conservation international as one of the world’s 34 official biodiversity hotspot, Sri Lanka is indeed the country that is very much alive and kicking.
Our national parks are home to 92 types of mammals such as the elephant, leopard, sloth bear, sambar, spotted deer, mouse and barking deer, porcupine, grand squirrel, macaque, and purple face leaf monkey. Yala National Park is believed to have the world’s largest concentration of leopards, Udawela National Park and Minneriya National Park are famous for elephants with the latter boasting of the famed gathering by the water during the dry season.
Sri Lanka is also one of the best places in the world while watching. Particularly blue whales, sperm whales, killer whales, and dolphins, often spotted in Mirissa along with with the southern coastal while five of the seven turtle species frequent in the North-Western coast. Negombo- A traditional fishing town in Sri Lanka where you can find wide sandy beaches and the safe sea. You can see fish auctions, fish market and fisherman pulling nets to the shore and Mthurajawela Marsh in the evening.
Muthurajawela Marsh translated as ‘Swamp of Royal Treasure,’ is home to a variety of flora and fauna includes 40 species of fish, 14 species of reptiles, 102 species of birds and 22 species of mammals. The boat ride at Muthurajawela provides a memorable experience in the coastal wetland ecosystem situated toward the southern end of Negombo Lagoon and allow you to keep an eye out for crocodiles, monkeys, water monitors, and birds.
Minneriya National Park- Get an unforgettable experience of elephant safaris that cut through the lake into the forest. Travel to a wilderness refuge known for hosting one of the largest gatherings of Asian elephants on earth, observing these giant creatures as they drink, feed, and congregate. Other than, you will get a chance to observe numerous species of birds, deer, wild rabbits, and wild boar as a bonus.
Kandy – A world heritage city, the capital of the Central Province and Sri Lanka’s most visited tourist destination. Kandy is in the middle of the mountains and its beauty is enhanced by the lake and the river Mahaweli and the Royal Botanical Garden Peradeniya.
On your way to Nuwara Eliya, you can observe few waterfalls Devon, Ramboda and a tea factory where the world-famous Ceylon Tea comes from.
Nuwara Eliya -The “Little England” of Sri Lanka offers you everything as any other town does. Its unique climate, the atmosphere, beautiful backdrops of mountains, valleys, waterfalls tea plantations. The Victoria Park, in the middle of the town and you can take leisure walks around the beautiful lake Gregory and enjoy stunning scenery with rugged mountains outlined against clear blue sky making a breath-taking backdrop.
Hikkaduwa- One of the best places in Sri Lanka where tourists can mingle with the beauty of the ocean via coral viewing through glass bottom boats. You can visit Hikkaduwa National Park where contains a fringing coral reef with a high degree of biodiversity.
Kosgoda- A small coastal village in the southwest of the country where you can enjoy your day with amazing beaches and Turtles. Enjoy visiting the Kosgoda Turtle Hatcheries and get a chance to see sea turtles of various species in the different stages of their lives. Help feed the turtles or volunteer for a first-hand experience with these interesting creatures.
Benthota- An area attracts tourists due to its picturesque beauty, especially its lovely palm-fringed beaches. Many fascinating rural lifestyles and traditional occupations like river fishing and wood carving can be seen in and around Bentota.
